The First Quarter - Classical Doctrine

The First Quarter Moon occurs when the Moon reaches 90 deg of elongation from the Sun - the first square (quartile) in the lunar cycle. Classical astrology treats the square as an aspect of tension, friction, and required action. The Moon is still waxing, still increasing in light, but now stands at an angle of challenge to the solar principle.

The Moon's Square to the Sun

At 90 deg elongation, the Moon is in quartile to the Sun. Classical doctrine holds that the square is a partile aspect of friction and required effort. The Moon's signification runs at cross-purposes to the Sun's - not in opposition, but at an uncomfortable angle that demands resolution.

Still Increasing in Light

Unlike the Last Quarter (a waning square), the First Quarter occurs while the Moon is still increasing in light. This means the underlying trajectory is still favorable: the Moon grows toward fullness. The challenge is to navigate the square's friction without abandoning the momentum built since the New Moon.

Moon in Pisces - Classical Doctrine

When Moon occupies Pisces, lunar instinct becomes porous, imaginative, and mutable, easily carrying impressions from its surroundings. Traditional delineation treats it as receptive and romantic, but also as prone to drift, discouragement, or vagueness without firmer supports.

"In a short time after the conjunction, she appears like a fine crescent, soon after the sun sets, which crescent begins to fill up, and the illuminated part to increase, as she advances in her orbit; and when she has performed a fourth part of her revolution, she appears to be half-illumined, being then in her first quarter"

"THE MOON IN PISCES. ☽ in ♓. The native is quiet, retiring, and easy-going, restless and fond of variety, changes his mind easily, is irresolute and not always to be depended upon, is rather easily discouraged, and meets with obstacles, misfortune and opposition in life. This position gives a liking for reading of a romantic or emotional kind, for poetry and music that appeals to the emotions and feelings. As speaker, writer, or composer the native is fluent, copious and imaginative, but diffuse. He inclines to be religious, but is in this respect more emotional than intellectual, and prone to feel rather than to reason out. Somewhat wanting in buoyancy and hope, he is too serious or too easily depressed, and may even lack matter-of-fact common-sense and humour. There is sometimes a tendency to intemperance, dissipation, or laudanum drinking, while on the other hand mediumship, clear dreaming, and various psychic powers may manifest themselves. This lunar position softens the frame and increases the fleshy and glandular structures; is therefore not favourable for robust health. There is danger from secret enemies; or the native may himself be not quite straightforward. There is some liability to detention in a hospital, poor-house, or prison; but these bad effects will not ensue unless there are accompanying bad aspects or other indications in the nativity"

"The Moon in Pisces describes a person of a mean, or low feature of Body, and the Complexion rather pale, than otherwise, the Hair a bright brown, the Body plump, or fat, a Person not much delighting in action (unless those of the worst kind,) and unfortunate in most undertakings, neither good for himself or others; the disposition may be somewhat meliorated provided the Moon be posited in a good place of the Figure, and in Aspect with good and adjuvant Planets, which must also be considered in all the Planets in their particular significations, (especially of the disposition and qualities of the (p. 66) mind) throughout the twelve Signs, which by an ingenious pregnant Artist may most easily be effected"

"THE SUN IN AQUARIUS AND MOON IN PISCES. ☉ in ♒. XI.—xii. ☽ in ♓. This is a more favourable Pisces combination than those previously given, as it gives much perseverance and carefulness, awakening the studious side of the Pisces nature. But with regard to this, much will depend upon planetary influences and the aspects to Sun and Moon. There is some amount of imagination, love of beauty, musical or artistic ability, refinement, and sentiment; much charitable feeling and sympathy. Some psychic or occult tendencies exist, and mediumship is easily developed. Unless very positive tendencies are given by the ascendant or planetary positions, the nature is unassuming, a little retiring, agreeable and sociable; more suited for some relatively quiet and unambitious occupation than for one involving publicity, responsibility, or conflict. Will benefit by friends and patrons,—or even by charity, if the planetary positions indicate any need of this"
