Demonology and occult encyclopedism
The most famous and visually iconic encyclopedia of demonology ever published. De Plancy's work provides a comprehensive taxonomy of the infernal hierarchy, including descriptions of hundreds of demons, their powers, appearances, and historical legends. While originally written from a skeptical perspective (1818), subsequent editions (especially the 6th edition of 1863) became more aligned with Catholic orthodoxy. The work is renowned for its 550 woodcut illustrations by Louis Le Breton, which defined the modern visual identity of many primary demons like Bael, Astaroth, and Behemoth. It covers not only demonology but also various superstitions, secret societies, and occult practices.
