Occultism, Vodou, travel writing
A sensational and first-hand account of life among the tribes of the Ivory Coast and West Africa. William Seabrook, a journalist and occult adventurer (famous for introducing 'zombies' to the American public in 'The Magic Island'), travels into the deep interior to witness and undergo indigenous rituals. The book contains vivid descriptions of cannibalism, social structures, and most significantly, the sorcery of the Gueré and other peoples. Seabrook approaches his subjects with a rare (for the time) lack of moralizing, attempting to understand the psychological and magical reality of West African spiritual life.
