Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), born Narendranath Datta, was the foremost disciple of the mystic Ramakrishna and the primary figure responsible for introducing Vedanta and yoga to the Western world. His landmark address at the 1893 Parliament of World's Religions in Chicago made him an international figure, and he subsequently founded the Ramakrishna Mission and Vedanta Societies in New York and San Francisco.
