Otto Seemann

1825 – 1901

Otto Seemann (1825–1901) was a German educator, historian, and classical scholar born in Herford and based in Hanover, best known for his comprehensive Mythologie der Griechen und Römer (first published 1875; translated into English as The Mythology of Greece and Rome with Special Reference to Its Use in Art, 1887). His work synthesized ancient myth with its artistic representations and became a widely used reference in classical studies throughout the nineteenth century.
