Victorian mythology and folklore retelling

H. A. Guerber

1859 – 1929

Hélène Adeline Guerber was an American writer who became one of the most widely read popularizers of world mythology in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, producing accessible retellings of Greek, Roman, Norse, medieval, and other mythological traditions in works including Myths of Greece and Rome (1893) and Myths of the Norsemen (1909). Her books presented ancient religious and mythological traditions to general audiences in narrative form, preserving sacred and symbolic content for mass readership at a time when mythology was migrating from academic to popular culture. Her retellings remain in print and continue to serve as introductions to pre-Christian religious worldviews.
