Herbert Allen Giles was a British diplomat and sinologist who served in China from 1867 to 1892 before holding the Chair of Chinese at Cambridge for 35 years. He is best known for co-developing the Wade-Giles romanisation system and for his translations of the Zhuangzi, Tao Te Ching, and Analects, as well as publishing the first comprehensive history of Chinese literature in English.
