Theosophy and mystical biography

Franz Hartmann

1838 – 1912

Franz Hartmann was a German-American physician, Theosophist, and prolific occult author who worked closely with Helena Blavatsky at Adyar and produced popular studies of Paracelsus, Jakob Böhme, and the Rosicrucians that helped transmit Renaissance esoteric traditions to late-Victorian readers. His Magic White and Black (1886) became a widely read practical introduction to occult philosophy, and his translations of Böhme and Paracelsus made these difficult mystics accessible to English-speaking Theosophists. He occupied a central position in the Theosophical network as both author and organizational figure, helping to define the movement's engagement with European mystical history.
