The Waning Crescent is the lunar cycle's closing chapter. The Moon has spent the last two weeks returning from the Full Moon's peak, decreasing in light with each passing day, and is now approaching the Sun's conjunction once more. The crescent that appears in the pre-dawn sky is growing thinner by the day.

Classical astrologers called this the Moon under the Sun's beams or approaching combustion. As the Moon comes within 17 deg of the Sun, its signification weakens dramatically. Within 8 deg, it is combust. At the exact conjunction, it is dark - the New Moon has arrived.

The Waning Crescent is not an auspicious phase for beginning new endeavors. In traditional doctrine it is a time for rest, reflection, release, and the deliberate completion of unfinished business before the next cycle begins.

Approaching the Sun's Beams

As the Moon enters the Waning Crescent, it is moving toward the Sun's beams (within 17 deg) and then toward combustion (within 8 deg). In classical doctrine, this proximity to the Sun progressively diminishes the Moon's ability to signify, act, and make aspects. The Moon is being consumed back into the solar source.

The Weakest Waning Condition
