Renaissance Christian skepticism and demonology

La strega, ovvero, degli inganni de' demoni

AdvancedPrimary Sourcecomplete

Written as a dialogue (originally titled Strix), this work was one of the first influential Italian treatises on witchcraft. Pico della Mirandola argues vehemently for the physical reality of the 'Sabbat' and demonic pacts, refuting contemporary skeptics who claimed witchcraft was merely a mental delusion or a result of 'melancholy.' The book served as a theoretical foundation for the persecution of witches in the 16th century.
