Psychical research, hypnotism

The Law of Psychic Phenomena: A Working Hypothesis for the Systematic Study of Hypnotism, Spiritism, Mental Therapeutics, etc.

Intermediatecomplete

A highly influential work that attempted to provide a unified scientific law for all 'psychic' phenomena, including hypnotism, spiritism (mediumship), mental healing, and clairvoyance. Hudson proposes the 'dual mind' theory: that man has a conscious 'objective' mind and a subconscious 'subjective' mind. He argues that the subjective mind is constantly amenable to control by suggestion and possesses extraordinary powers, explaining the phenomena of the seance and the clinic as purely psychological rather than supernatural.
