Early Christian heresiography
Volume 1 contains Books 1–4 of Hippolytus' monumental work. Book 1 examines Greek philosophical schools (Thales, Pythagoras, Plato, etc.), which Hippolytus identifies as the root of later Christian heresies. Book 4 attacks 'Chaldaean' astrologers, arithmeticians, and diviners, linking their mystical systems to the emergence of Gnostic doctrine.
