Christian mysticism translation
C. de B. Evans's landmark English translation of the sermons and treatises of Meister Eckhart (c. 1260–1328), the greatest of the German Dominican mystics. This first volume presents Eckhart's vernacular sermons in which he develops his radical mystical theology: the birth of the Word (Logos) within the soul, the concept of the "spark of the soul" (Seelenfünklein) as the point of identity with the Godhead, the necessity of detachment (Abgeschiedenheit), and union with God beyond all names and images. Eckhart's speculative mysticism drew censure from the Church but has profoundly influenced Western mystical thought from Tauler and Suso through to Hegel and beyond.
