Catholic contemplative mysticism

St. Teresa of Avila

1515 – 1582

Teresa of Avila was a Spanish Carmelite nun and reformer whose Interior Castle (1577) mapped the soul's journey through seven dwelling places toward union with God, becoming one of the most sophisticated works of Christian mystical theology. She described experiences of infused contemplation, spiritual betrothal, and mystical marriage with precise psychological detail. In 1970 Pope Paul VI named her the first female Doctor of the Church.
