Ceremonial magic and Hermetic occultism
1854 – 1918
Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers was a British occultist and ceremonial magician who co-founded the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1888 with William Wynn Westcott and William Robert Woodman, shaping its entire ritual system and magical curriculum. He translated key grimoires into English — including the Key of Solomon, the Book of Abramelin, and the Greater Key of Solomon — making previously inaccessible Renaissance magical texts available to a wide audience. His visionary leadership of the Golden Dawn attracted figures including Aleister Crowley, William Butler Yeats, and Arthur Machen, cementing the Order's position as the most influential esoteric organisation in the English-speaking world.
