Gothic humorous supernatural folklore verse

Richard Harris Dalton Barham

1788 – 1845

Richard Harris Barham was an English Anglican clergyman and comic writer who published The Ingoldsby Legends under the pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby, beginning in Bentley's Miscellany in 1837. These verse tales drew richly on medieval Catholic legend, ghost lore, and supernatural folklore in a satirical-Gothic register, making them enduringly popular treatments of the uncanny in Victorian England.
