Papus (Gérard Encausse)

1865 – 1916

Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse (1865–1916), writing as Papus, was a French physician and the most influential systematizer of French occultism at the fin de siècle, whose Tarot of the Bohemians (1889) presented the Tarot as a complete esoteric key to Kabbalah and Hermetic philosophy. In 1891 he founded the modern Martinist Order, reviving the initiatic tradition of Martinez de Pasqually and Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, and was a prolific author bridging Theosophy, ceremonial magic, and Rosicrucian thought.
