Classical scholarship and Platonic translation
1817 – 1893
Benjamin Jowett was an English classical scholar, Anglican cleric, and Master of Balliol College, Oxford. His landmark four-volume translation of the Dialogues of Plato (1871, revised 1875) brought Platonic philosophy — including its mystical and metaphysical dimensions — into authoritative English prose, making the dialogues foundational texts for Victorian esoteric and idealist thought.
