Symbolist literary translation, fin-de-siècle
1865 – 1921
Alexander Louis Teixeira de Mattos was a Dutch-born English journalist and literary translator who became the principal English-language translator of Maurice Maeterlinck, rendering the Belgian Symbolist playwright's mystical and occult-inflected works — including The Blue Bird and The Intelligence of Flowers — for Anglophone audiences. He also translated major works by Zola, Fabre, and Leroux.
